The jewellery industry has changed dramatically. Modern production has made it possible to manufacture thousands of rings quickly, efficiently and at increasingly competitive prices.

There is nothing inherently wrong with production jewellery. But we believe there should still be a place for something different.

A place where an engagement ring is treated as a piece of fine jewellery rather than simply another product. Where the construction, proportions, setting, finishing and long-term wear of the piece matter just as much as how beautiful it looks on the day it is purchased.

That is why Raphana exists.

Our Philosophy

We Don't Believe Fine Jewellery Should Feel Disposable.

When somebody chooses an engagement ring, they are choosing an object that may be worn almost every day for decades.

It will experience thousands of ordinary moments work, travel, celebrations, children, anniversaries and everything that happens between them.

So we approach jewellery with a simple question: will this piece still deserve to be worn years from now?

That question influences how we select materials, how a ring is constructed, how stones are set, how the piece is finished and, importantly, how it is inspected before reaching its owner.

What Makes a Raphana Piece Different?

Made With Longevity in Mind

Our priority is not simply making jewellery look beautiful in a photograph. We consider the structure, metal, setting and finishing required for jewellery intended to be worn and enjoyed for years.

Fine Jewellery Standards

Our philosophy is closer to traditional fine jewellery houses: careful proportions, considered construction, precision stone setting, refined finishing and rigorous final inspection.

Personally Overseen

Every Raphana piece is overseen by our in-house Master Jeweller, Raphael Yamaji, providing another level of accountability between the design, craftsmanship and the jewellery ultimately delivered to our client.

Selected Diamonds

A certificate tells you important information about a diamond, but it does not tell the entire story. Stones are considered for their proportions, brilliance and overall character before becoming part of a Raphana piece.

Precious Materials

We work with fine gold and platinum and carefully selected diamonds and gemstones. Material choice is considered as part of the life of the jewellery — not simply its appearance on day one.

A Different Standard

Inspired by the Traditions of Fine Jewellery

The world's great jewellery houses built their reputations long before jewellery became an industry of enormous production volumes.

Houses such as Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Bulgari and Graff established a philosophy in which craftsmanship, proportion, stone selection, finishing and longevity were fundamental to the value of a piece.

Raphana is an independent New Zealand jeweller, not affiliated with these houses. But we strongly believe in the same enduring principle: fine jewellery should be made as something worth keeping.

We would rather be known for the quality of the pieces that leave our hands than simply for the number of pieces we can produce.

One of the things we never want Raphana to become is anonymous.

Behind the website, the diamonds and the finished jewellery are real people who are accountable for what carries the Raphana name.

Our jewellery is overseen in-house by Master Jeweller Raphael Yamaji, from the details of the design and construction through to the standards expected of the finished piece.

It means there is somebody asking the questions that matter: Is the setting right? Are the proportions balanced? Is the finishing where it should be? Is this something we are genuinely proud to put our name behind?

Because when our name is attached to a piece, we believe our reputation should be attached to it too.
